The Cambridge and Birmingham Universities have conferred a Uoclorship 011 Sir J. (J. Ward. Mr. J. B. Murray was last night reelected chairman of the Wanganui Harbor Board.—Press Telegram. A London cablegram reports the death of Mr. Walter Savill, senior member of the Shaw, Savill aud Albion Shipping Company. Mr. Frank Morton, the well-known, writer and lecturer, is at present an inmate of a private hospital in Auckland, suffering from a somewhat serious illness. Sir James Mills, managing director of. the Union Steamship Company, is toleave Auckland by the steamer Maitai to-day for San Francisco, whence she will proceed to England. Mr. Win. Pryor, general secretary of the New Zealand Employers' Association, who has been in New Plymouth for the past few days, leaves for Wellington by the mail train this morning. Mr. J. W. Foreman, chairman of the Clifton County Council, was appointed to represent the council as a (member of the Assessment Court in connection, with the re-valuation of the lands in the county. A Sydney cablegram announces the death of Dr. Camidge, Anglican Bishop of Bathurst. He expired suddenly while writing a letter, death being due t» heart failure. He was the oldest Bishop, of Australia, and was twice actingPrimate. Dr. Wollnough, of the Sydney University, has been selected as the geologist to accompany the Northern Territory scientific expedition organised by Professors Gilruth, Spencer, and David. Dr. Wollnough has high credentials. Queen Alexandra, who has been on a yachting cruise, has arrived in London from Trieste to attend the King Edward memorial service on Saturday next. The Vienna correspondent of the Daily News says that Queen Alexandra was unwell during the whole of the cruise. Messrs. H. Ward, F. W. Brooking, and. F. Newall, imemberg of the Taranaki bowling team which visited Sydney, arrived home by the mail train laßt night, after having had a very pleasant trip.. The remaining members of the team will return by the Maheno. A Te Kuiti telegram states that Dr. Pomare, of the Native Health Department, is resigning his position tn six weeks to contest the Western Maori seat. His chief objects are to defeat T. Mahuta and to help the Natives in raising themselves to a higher sanitary and hygienic level. Pepene Eketone, who was defeated at last election, is also standing for the seat. Mr. A. Drew, who has just resigned his position as organist and choirmaster of All Saints' (Anglican) Church, Palmerston North, owing to contracted sinews in the bands, has filled the position for twenty-one years. Previous to that lie was for almost an equal number of years in the same capacity in St. Mary's Church, New Plymouth. Miss Drew has been appointed to succeed him at Palmerston North.' A first impression of the new Bishop of Auckland, as related to a Southern interviewer by the acting-Primate (Bishop Julius),.who conducted the consecration, is that of " a quiet, cautious, reliable man, with something of the fire and eloquence of the Irishman and something of the caution of the Yorkshireman—in short, just the man to do good service in the diocese of Auckland under present conditions." Bishop Julius said that the new Bishop received a very warm greeting from the members of the Anglican Church in Auckland, and from the leaders of other bodies, including a very warm letter of greeting from Dr. deary, the Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland. The acting-Primate, in referring to the excellent sermon preached 'by Bishop Crossley on the night of his enthronement, remarked that it was on such occasions that one felt the need of a great Cathedral Church, one fit for the mother diocese of New Zealand.
