HOCKEY

An endeavor is being made to form a hockey club in Waitara, and with a view to popularising the game, it wa,s suggested that New Plymouth and Inglewood clubs should play an exhibition match there. This match will probably eventuate on Thursday week.

To-morrow the Xew Plymouth Clul) will play a practice match at the racecourse with teams picked from those on the ground. It is hoped sufficient will turn up to enable two complete elevens to he picked so that useful practice may be obtained. This is especially necessary, as the team to play in the exhibition game at Waitara will be chosen from this practice, and if the idea ofj fostering the game in the river port is to he carried out, the members taking part in the game will need to possess condition individually and combination so as to ensure an attractive display. To-morrow the New Plymouth Club will hold a meeting on the racecourse for the purpose of electing a~field captain, vice-captain, secretary and committee. LADIES' ASSOCIATION'. The annual meeting of the Ladies' Association was held at Inglewood on Friday night. Those present were: Messrs Matheson (Kaponga), in the chair, W. Nicoll (Xew Plymouth Wliakatika), H. Barnard (Eltham), Miss Young (Hawera), and Mr. F. Dewhirst (Inglewood), ■lion, secretary. Officers were elected as follows:—Patron, Dr. Fookes; president, Mr. W. G. Malone; vice-presidents, last year's officers re-elected; lion, secretary and treasurer, Mr. W. 11. Quickfall.

Mr. F. Dewhirst, the retiring secretar", was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his past services. It was resolved that the profit of £lO 105 4d from last year's annual tournament. held at Nelson; be paid over to tlie clulis in proportion to the representation -of each club in the tournament team.

The inter-club matches will commence on May 25. and entries close on May 11. Messrs Barnard and Matheson were appointed a fixture committee, and Messrs Xicoll (north division) and Matheson (soiith) a competition executive committee. Votes of thanks were accorded last year's officers.
