RIFLE SHOOTING

OKATO CLUB. On Saturday last, the second of the series of five matches for the "married men's cup" and the "Grover medal" was fired. The weather conditions as nearly j approached tire perfect as the local men arc likely to be favored with. The liglit was unchanging and the wind varied from three left at 201) yards to three left at 800 yards. Some excellent shooting was made. Three possible were recorded, one at each range, while several 34's were also put up. Rifleman Thomas compiled the very fine score of 103, being closely followed by Rifleman Grover, with 102. The latter marksman was unfortunate in getting inners for his last two shots. Appended are the scores:—

Telephones are shortly to lie installed on the range, '.vhicli is already plentifully supplied with flags. In addition, a movement is on foot to add the new service targets to the list of equipment. The range will then hp one of the most up-to-date on the coast. I>y far the greater part of the work of improvement has been carried out by President Hart at great personal inconvenience, though he will not admit that it has been other (liau a labor of love. The club is most fortunate in possessing such a live and energetic leader. Vice-president Grover, the secretary, Rifleman Evani, the late /president and secretary, Messrs Penwarden and Evans, have also rendered signal service. Bv no means least among those to whom the thanks of the club are due is Mr. ,T. Putt, who in a very public spirited manner lias kindly placed his properly at the disposal of the club. A tribute of praise must also be paid to the markers, than whom there are no better on the coast. This up-to-date range is nlmost in the heart of the township, and it is surprising that more of the local people do not patronise it. At the present time, in view of the new military movement, an object more worthy of public support could hardly be found. Plenty of good material from which to make excellent shots exist in the district, so wake up, Okato!
