FIFTY PER CENT. INCREASE IN WAGES.

Supporting an application for an exemption from the Wages Board award, a. railway contractor declared that he took a contract three years ago. The wages for pick-and-shovel work were then seven shillings a day. Now the wages were !)s fid a day, and higher grades had proportionately increased.
