JAPANESE EXPLORERS FAIL

RETURN OF THE SOUTH POLE EXPEDITION.

By Oable—Press Association—Copyright, Received 1, 11.45 p.m. Sydney, May 1.

Shipping circles were astonished hv the arrival late this afternoon of the Japanese exploring ship, Kainan Maru, which recently left New Zealand in an attempt to locate the South Pole.

The officers are reticent, but interviewers managed to learn that the ship reached Colman Island, well within the Antarctic Circle. They remained there four days, but having lost ten of the eleven dogs through sickness, they could not land. So they decided to return to Sydney. It is stated that they will make another attempt later.
