OBITUARY

MR. JAMES SOLE. A very old pioneer passed away at Westown on Saturday morning in the person of Mr. James Sole, at tfcfl advanced age of 92 years. The deceased had for the past few weeks been gradually getting weaker, but was not confined to his bed. Heart failure was the cause of his death. He was one of the oldest settlers of New Plymouth, having arrived here in the Oriental in 1841, just 70 years ago. During the whole of that time he has remained in New Plymouth, excepting for a short time after the war, when he went to Nelson to bring his family back to New Plymouth. He took an active part in the Maori war, and with two other companions, Messrs. E. Rowe and the late Tims. Langman, he was ambushed by about fifteen Maoris at Westown on the farm that is now Munro's. Mr. Langman was wounded, but the others escaped uninjured. It will be remembered that Mr. and Mrs. Sole celebrated their golden wedding only eleven weeks ago. He leaves a widow and six children, with several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as a brother aged !)0, to mourn their loss. The members of the family who survive are Messrs. Charles Sole (Rahotu), H. Sole (Durham road). Frank Sole (Puniho), Mrs. Luke (Waiongona), and Misses M. and E. Sole. The funeral takes plac* to-day at Te Henui.
