DAIRY PRODUCE REPORT. Messrs. E. Griffiths and Co. are in receipt of the following market report from their London principals, Messrs. Mills and Sparrow, dated March 17th, 1911: Bright cold weather has been experienced during the past week. BUTTER. Danish.—A better demand has caused' a rise of two kroner. Siberian. —Tho few fresh-made butters arriving meet with a ready sale, as the quality is fine, but arrivals from this source will be very small for the next few weeks. Australian.—We have had the b.s. Mantua with about 38,000 boxes, b.s. Runic with 9000 this week, and the s.s. Narrung, which arrived'at the end of last week, with 10,000 boxes, so that there has beer a fair supply, but we are pleased to report an improvement in the business, especially on best quality, which is still comparatively scarce. Values for this grade have been firm, and we fully expect to make higher prices next week. Although there has been a little more trade on secondary butters, prices, if anything, are slightly easier. The proportion of seconds just now is rather large, and we should not be surprised to see the difference between best and seconds widen, as the season goes on. We arc pleased to hear that shipments are keeping up so well, as it will undoubtedly be a good thing for the trade when buyers can produce the butter all the year round.
New Zealand.—The s.s. lonic docked at the end of last week, but is discharging butter very slowly, it now being the end of the week, and only a small proportion of the butter is available for delivery. Last week's prices have been well maintained, and we are inclined to think that thi3 boat will clear up better than for some time past, and we are hoping that we have seen the bottom of the market for some iimei A great de&l has been said and done regarding the unsatisfactory quality of the New Zealand butter this season, which has certainly done injury to the trade, and we are of the opinion that this has been greatly exaggerated, and only in the case of a few brands has there been any cause for complaint, the quality generally being quite up to previous years.
CHEESE. Canadian.—Really fine quality is now getting scarce, and commands a little more money. New Zealand.—We have had a brisk market. As anticipated by us for the last two weeks prices have improved. There is certainly no reason why they should ever have been so slow. Colored now hardly commands any premium, and we think in the near future both white and colored will be on a level. FROZEN PORK. Pigs are in short supply, and are well cleared.
