Mr. F. W. Court, who has been on a business visit to England, returned to New Plymouth by last night's express.
Mr. and Mrs. Hickman, who are leaving Opunake, were entertained by the residents on Wednesday evening, and presented with souvenirs.
The Hon. R. Mackenzie, Minister of Public Works, will pay a visit to the Taranaki district next "week for the purpose of inspecting road and railway works and the New Plymouth oilfield. Mr. Harry H. Holmes, owner of the Matahiwi estate, near Masterton, an* a director of the Wellington Meat Export Company, died laßt night after » short illness, at the age of 56. Deceased leaves a widow (daughter of the lafc Hon. Walter Johnston), two daughters and a son.—Press Association.
Mr. Frank Courtenay Seymour, a fkst cousin to Admiral Seymour, of the British navy, died suddenly on the Rotorua road, about twenty-eight miles from Rotorua, on Monday evening. The deceased, who had been at roadman in the district for about fifteen years, expired with a shovel in his hand while occupied at his work. He was a Maori war veteran.
Mr. D. McAllum, who has bean secretary to the Taranaki Acclimatisation Society for the past eighteen years, was on his retirement from the position last evening elected a life member of the society. A similar honor was conferred on Mr. W. L. Newman, another old and enthusiastic worker. Mr. McAJJmn still intends to take an active interest in thg management of the society, and occupies a seat on the council.
Prior to tho departure of Mr. J. ft. Bocock from the. Central School to assume the headmastership of the school at Huiroa he was entertained at a little valedictory gathering arranged by the pupils of Standard IV., of which he has had charge. Mr. F. P. Corkill, chairman of the school eommitteo, presided, the headmaster and all the teachers also be ing present. After a tasty little tea, the chairman delivered a short address, in the course of which he stated that Mr. Rocock's connection with the schodl bad been characterised by the correctness of his work and his conscientious devotion to duty. On behalf of th» boys and girls he had much pleasure to presenting Mt. Bocock with a sterling silver shaving apparatus, suitably inscribed, which he asked him to accent as a memento of his connection with tfc boys and girls of Standard IV. lister Jack Cottier then presented Mrs. Btoock with an autograph album, and Masfti G Bradbury handed to Mrs. Bocock « little gift for the family. Mr. Dem* sey headmaster, and Mr. Mcllroy, assistant master, expressed their coo* wishes and Mr. Bocock replied in aV propnate terms. .
