PECULIAR THEFT CASE
MAN CONFESSES HIS FAULT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, Wednesday. In the Police Court this morning Arthur Robert Cant, master mariner, who had charge of the Union Steamship Company's labor department, was charged with the theft of £llß 17s, the property of the company. The case showed some remarkable features. It appeared that accused was in iinancial difficulties, and in order to pay pressing accounts he used the money which had been given him to pay off the crew of the Koromiko. Detective Ward said that accused called at the police station and said that he wished to give himself in charge, because he had stolen £ 100 belonging to the Union Company. Accused signed a statement and handed witness £IC odd. Witness and others testified that accused bore an excellent character. Accused's solicitor asked for bail, but the Magistrate indicated that in accordance with a recent decision of a Supreme Court judge this was not a case in which he was free to allow bail, if accused pleaded guilty. Accused then reserved his defence and was committed for trial, bail being allowed.
