MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS
NEW PLYMOUTH. | Very little interest was taken in the municipal elections yesterday, especially considering the fact that the Municipal Progressive Association had recently been formed, and infused some additional zest into the contest. In the Central Ward there were 754 voters on the roll, but less than 300 recorded their I votes. The Association "ticket" was returned, Mr. Ambury heading the list
with 217 votes, Mr. Stocker 214, and, Mr. Clarke 202. These were declared' elected. The two former are new to municipal honors, though Mr. Ambury | has had considerable service on other bodies. Mr. West, the sitting member,! who stood "on his own," was defeated. I In the West Ward, out of 781 electors less than 450 voted. Two of the Pro-' gressive Association's candidates were; returned, viz., Messrs. G. W. Browne, ai sitting member, who headed the poll with 234, and J. C. Morey, a new as-i pirant, with 204. Mr. J. T. Mannix, a sitting member, who opposed the Association's ticket, received 194 votes, and secured the third seat. The defeat-! Ed candidates were Messrs. N. T. Maun-' der, one of the selected candidates, and H. J. Gilbert, a member of the former council. | There was a small crowd in front
of the Town Hall when the results were announced, and very little surprise was { expressed at the result, except that it' | had been considered more than prob-l I able that Mr. Gilbert would have been! J returned. The returning officer, Mr. F. 1 | T. Bellringer, had capable men in charge s 'of the various booths, and the results I were announced very promptly. The new Council will be composed of five of the retiring members (Messrs G. W. Browne, .7. T. Mannix, J. Clarke, G. Hartnell and •!. Buttimore) and four new members (Me-srs W. Ambury, J. C. Morey, If. Stocker anil T. Buxton). Two members of the retirhi'.' Council (Messrs F. E. Wilson and A. K. Watkins) did not seek re-election, whist Me<srn J. West and 11. J. Gilbert were defeated. In the mayoral elections, E. H. Penny was re-elected liv a majority of 78, defeating Councillor \Y. Can- bv 71;} to 035. MASTERTON. Masterton, Last Night. The municipal elections held here today resulted in the return of Messrs. O'Leary, Elliott, Ewington, Hoar, Candy, Temple, Prentice, W. Pragnell, and Donald. A poll was taken on the proposal to raise a loan of £5500 for the formation of a new street, and was defeated by 380 votes to 238. CHRISTCIIURCH. Christchurch, Last Night. The mayoral contest aroused tremendous interest, and there was a gathering of several thousand to-night wnen the results were announced. The figures were:—T. E. Taylor. M.P.. 7401: Dr. Thacker, 4SIIS: 'C. Allison (retiringMayor), 3«Bi>. _ The Citizens' Committee ticket, consisting mostly of old councillors, was returned for the central ward ((!)' and .St. Albans ward (2). In the Linwood ward one ex-councillor got in. and one Labor candidate. In Sydenham ward four Labor candidates were elected, displacing the four old councillors. WELLINGTON SUBURBS.

Jas. Kerr, E. Perkins, E. Sheedy, G. Sweetman, Joini Tennant and R. Russell being elected. Four out of the five nominated by the Labor Party were successful.
DUNEDIN. Dunedin, Last Night. The city mayoralty election to-day resulted as'follows :—Burnett, 0381; Wilson, 5488. DUNEDIN SUBURBS. Dunedin, Last Night. In Mornington, Mr. Bridger was reelected, and in St. Kilda H. M. Ewing was returned. NELSON. Nelson, Last Night. The city mayoral election resulted: T. A. Field. 1231; T. Pettit (retiring Mayor), 1047. PALMERSTON NORTH. Palmerston N., Last Night. Great interest was taken in the Council election. There were twenty-three-can-didates. The pollying was "heavy, and the following were elected: —Messrs Armstrong, Nathan. Haydon, Mowlcm, Clan-en. Stubbs, McCartV. O'Reilly and Beale.
WELLINGTON. ) Wellington, Last Night. | There was great excitement in the polling to-day for city councillors, harbor board members, and the weekly halfholiday. Definite results will not be known till after midnight. On the present results it seems likely that Mr. Fletcher will head the poll both for the council and the har.bor board. The Labor people ran eight candidates for the council, but appear to have succeeded only in electing two, both of whom wore in the last council. It seems certain that Wednesday will be retained as the day for the weekly half-holiday. i WESTPORT. Westport, Last Night. ' In the Mayoral election Mr. J. H. Greenwood was re-elected for the fifth consecutive year, defeating. Mr. T. Q. O'Brien by 975 votes to 591. In the council elections all the former members who went to the poll were returned, with one exception, Cr. Leaver heading the poll. GISBORNE. Gisborne, Last Night. The Mayoral election resulted as follows: W. D. Lvsnar 1591. J. Sheridan 1294. The council election was not complete at midnight. Great interest is being taken in it.
WANOANUI AND SUBURBS. Wanganui, Last Night. The borough council elections resulted in the return of Messrs. Poyliter, Liffiton, Burgess, Muir, Sprigging, Oliver, Robinson, Holloway, Spurdle. The proposal to raise a loan 01. £11.500 for a bridge across the river) was carried by an overwhelming major-j ity. I Wanganui East carried a loan proposal for trams, bridge, and road work. I The election for Wanganui East council resulted in the return of Messrs. MeCaul, Renefield, Burton, Beaven, Willis, Wickham, O'Leary, and Thompson. NAPIER. Napier, Last Night. The result of tie election for the Hastings Mayoralty was as follows: J.I Gurnett 1250, T. J. Thompson 496, W.' Lane 386. ELECTION ACCIDENTS. Christchureh, Last Night. At the polling for New Brighton today a big crowd rushed the booth just on closing time, and as they would not leave, tiie returning officer announced that the poll would be continued tomorrow. At one of the booths in the city an outbreak of fire occurred, a kerosene lamp falling to the floor. The outbreak, however, was suppressed before 1 very serious damage was caused. I
