ANTARCTIC EXPLORATION

AMUNDSEN'S UNDERTAKING. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 27, 12.12 a.m. London, April 20. ■ Professor Nansen, in a. letter' to the Times on Captain Amundsen's Antarctic expedition, says that an unfair act of any kind is entirely alien to Amundsen's character. Captain Amundsen, in a letter to him, amplified what he cabled on the' sth, and added that Lieut. Peary's success had led to the withdrawal r/ support for the North Pole expedition. He stated that he would not land near Captain Scott's expendition.

Nansen remarks: "Had I known of the change of plans, I might have warned him that it would be too hard a strain, first to proceed on a trying South Polar expedition, and then straightway to a drift voyage across the North Polar basin, calculated to occupy five years." He approved of Major Darwin's speech, cabled on the 11th. The two bases were far apart and both explorers would be able to supplement each other's discoveries.
