Mr. W. G. Reid returned to New Plymouth yesterday morning after a visit of a fortnight's duration to Auckland and the Thames.
A London cablegram reports that the Rev. Dr. H. M. Burge, headmaster of Winchester College, has been appointed Bishop of Soutnwark, in succession to Dr. Talbot.
It is understood ny the "h-.iHu-' Post that Mr. J. F. Batcy has handed in lis resigMttion as manager of the Stialford Dairy Company, which position he has hold for the past 'fifteen years. Mr. H. J. H. Okey, M.P., returned on' Tuesday night after a trip with other members of Parliament along the route of the proposed East Coast railway. During his ten days' absence, Mr. Okey travelled over 1550 miles by rail, steamer and coach.
One of New Zealand's old settlers, in the person of Mr. Thos. Inglcy, died nt his house. Greytown, a few days ago, at the ripe age of 01 years. The late Mr. Ingley arrived in New Zealand in 1856, and, taking up a large tract of grazing land in Greytown, had lived there until his demise. Mr. Joseph Ingley, of New Plymouth, is the eldest son of the deceased gentleman. At the Education Board meeting yesterday, the following resignations were accepted:—Mrs. M. E. Martin, assistant, Tnglewood; Mrs.'McMillan, sole teacher, Puniwhaknu; Mrs. K. Morris, sole teacher, Oakura: Mrs. O. Clark, sole teacher, Pohokura; Mrs. E. Crichten, sole teacher, Kotare. Miss Bicheno, teacher at the ['ruti School, was granted leave of absence, owing to illness. Rifleman Needham, a member of the Bisley team, was farewelled on Tuesday evening at Palmerston by members of local volunteer corps and rifle clubs, and presented with a purse of sovereigns from the Linton Rifle Club. During the evening Captain Mounsey was presented with a gold pocket mountain barometer in recognition of services rendered to the Manawatu Rifle Association. Mr. R. W. P. Robertson, who has been associated with Messrs J. B. MncEwan and Co. for many years, recently severed his connection with that firm and has now accepted the position of authorised representative of Messrs Andrew Clement and Sons, Ltd., the well-known dairy produce salesmen, of Glasgow, Manchester, Liverpool, and Tooley-street, London. The growing importance of tho New Zealand supplies of dairy produce has made it necessary for Messrs Clement and Sons to appoint a direct representative of their own in New Zealand. Mr. Robertson intends making his headquarters at New Plymouth.
