HOUSEHOLDERS' MEETINGS
OAONUI. Only five householders attended the, annual meeting. Mr. J. Young presided.' The report showed that the progress of the school had been very marked under Mrs. McArthur, headmistress, and I was now in a better position than ever! Last year seven pupils were presented for examination in the sixth standard and all passed with proficiency. The school was also successful in retaining the Tisch Shield for the best grounds, etc. The five members present, viz., Messrs. 11. P, Malcolm, J. C. O'Rorke, R. McFie, A. Lusk and Jas. Young, were elected to the committee, and the Education Board will be asked to nominate two householders to fill the vacancies. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the schoolmistress (Miss McArthur) and staff. Mr. Jas. Young was subsequently re-elected chairman and Mr. A. Lusk secretary.
KORU. H. S. Watson (chairman), P. T. Raill, W. H. Bishop, G. Meredith, J. Bentham, E. Looney and L. Mace. OMATA. Owing to the weather tlj* householders' meeting lapsed, only two gentlemen braving the eleemnts. ■ STRATFORD. There were forty householders present at Stratford on Monday evening. Mr. W. C. Cargill presided. The annual report congratulated tTie householders on the continued prosperity of the school. One pupil had won a University scholarship, seven had won senior board scholarships, and seven junior, three senior civil service and four junior civil service passes, seven matriculation and solicitors' general knowledge passes, eighteen senior free High School places and thirty-one junior. At the end of the school year there were 119 pupils on the roll of the secondary school, and 547 on the primary roll. The average attendance of both schools for the year had been 584. A contract had been let for a glass-house for the study of plant life. The balance-sheet showed net receipts, including £44 10s Id brought forward, £291 8s 7d; net expenditure £255 4s 7d. Eleven nominations were received for the nine seats, and the following members were returned. Messrs. P. Skoglund, Geo. Smart, A. Stewart, C. D. Sole, R. H. Cameron, J. N. McMillan, D. McMillan, J. Butcher, and P. McMahon. At a meeting held subsequently Mr. C. D. Sole was re-elected chairman.
TARIKI. Nine householders were present, and the following six members were elected: Messrs J.Therkleson (chairman),Coutts, Buckingham, Stephenson, D. Jones and Mrs. S. A. Jamicson (secretary). , URENUI. Mr. A. H. Haleombc presided over an attendance of five. The report and bal-ance-sheet was very satisfactory. The attendance of the school is keeping up very well. The five householders present, viz., Messrs. R, H. Piggott, E. Julian, A. McLillan, S. Taylor, and A. H. Halcombe, were appointed, and it was resolved that the names of Messr*. Weston and Butler be recommended to the Board for appointment to the vacancies. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the chairman and outgoing committee. Mr. A. H. Halcombe was re-ap-pointed chairman, secretary and treasurer. Mr. E. Julian was appointed to countersign cheques. The committee will meet the first Wednesday in each month.
BELL BLOCK. Fourteen householders attended the Bell Block sclioolroom last night. Mr. J. Connett presided, and in his report mentioned the good work done by the teachers Miss Potts (headmistress} and Miss Rice (assistant). The teacher is now instructing dairying and agricultural classes, the necessary apparatus having been procured. The followrng committee was elected: Messrs. F. Horsup, F. IToskin, J. Holmes, J. Polatti, J. Rutherford, K. C. King and J. W. Downs. Mr. F. Horsup was elected chairman and Mr. J. W. Downs secretary and treasurer. WAREA. The householders' meeting did not eventuate, only four householders being present, owing to the wet night.—Own correspondent. TARATA. Xo „ committee .was elected at the mefttin'g >at Turahi. The chairman of the committee (which recently resigned) attended to liand over the'school accounts, etc., the only other person present being Mr. Dayj the teacher.—Own correspondent. OPUNAKE. About fourteen were present, Mr. G. Looney being voted to the chair. The report of the outgoing committee was read, also the balance-sheet, and both were adopted. Ten householders were proposed for the committee, the following being elected: Messrs. Looney, Dudley, Humphries, hotter, Markham, Malcolm and Mildenhall. At a subsequent meeting of the committee Mr. G. Looney was re-elected chairman and Mr. E. J. Dudley re-elected secretary and treasurer.—Own correspondent."
DURHAM. There was only a moderate attendance of householders of the Durham School district at the election of the school committee. The south-easterly wind and rain no doubt kept "many away. The chairman of the outgoing'committee (Mr. F. Hodges) was voted to the chair, and gave a review or summary of the past year's doings. Incidentally, he drew attention to the new additions to the Education Act, whereby parents must send their children every day, and also mentioned the liability there was ot children being forced to ' attend school until seventeen years of, age.—Neither alteration met with any iupport by ilm majority present, several householders making rather strong comments anent them. The chairman stated that the total attendance was now 34, and that the returns for the different periods of the year were as under: Quarter ending March, 39 on roll, average attendance 17.8 boys and 18.2 girls; quarter ending June, 40, average IB.fl and 19.0; quarter ending September, 38, average 17.1 and 17.3: quarter endin'e December, 38. average 18 and 15.9. The financial position showed, ho said, the earsful management of the past committee, there being 7s !)d cash in hand and a balance in the bank of £l2 0s fid. He suggested improvements to school grounds being undertaken. denced in other parts), is a grand source) of instruction to the young. ! The election of a committee resulted in the following being returned: Messrs. F. Hodges, J. Corney, G. Mehrtens, ,1, Simpson, H. Dodunski, F. Dodunski, J. Bridgeman. Mr. Hodges was appointed chairman and Mr. J. Simpson secretary. The chairman and secretary were appointed delegates to the School Committees' Association.—Own correspondent. YORK. Messrs B. Crofskey (chairman), M. F. Ryan (secretary), Dombroski, Volzke. Ncilsen. NORFOLK. Eight householders attended, and Mr. Stevens was voted to the chair. The chairman read the annual report and balance-sheet, the latter showing a credit of £6 17s. He stated that the attendance showed a satisfactory attendance. The outgoing committee reported that new gates and concrete posts had been erected, with the assistance of the Board. The committee recommended that the new committee should endeavor to substitute a piano for the organ. Attention was drawn to the improvement in the status of school committees owing to the amendment of the Education Act of last session, also to the system of transferring teachers recently adopted by the Education Board. A resolution was adopted supporting the formation of a Dominion scheme for appointment and promotion of teachers. The old committee was re-elected— Messrs R. Stevens (chairman), J. W. Burgess, W. Corney, A. Johnston, J. H. Jones, A. Marshall and H. Trimble (secretary and treasurer). Owing to the rough weather preventing sufficient householders from attending, no committees were elected at the following schools:—Cardiff, Waitui, Huiroa, Kiorc, Rowan, and Okato.
