BOROUGH COUNCIL

An adjourned meeting of the Borough Council was held last night, when there were present: His Worship the Mayor . (Mr. G. Tisch), in the chair, Crs. Browne, Mannix, Clarke, Watkins, West, Buxton, Buttimore and Hartncll. Crs. Buttimore, Buxton and Hartnell, the newly-elected councillors for the eastern ward, made the usual declaration hefore taking their seats. MORLEY AND BARRETT STREETS. Tenders were considered for earthwork in Morley and Barrett streets, and it was resolved, on the motion of theMayor, seconded by Cr. Browne, that, subject to the schedule of prices and quantities being approved by the borough engineer, and subject to the usual formal contract being signed, the tender of Messrs Geo; Walker and Sons, of £270 8s 4d, be accepted. SEWERAGE PIPES. Two tenders were received for pipes, viz., one each for eathenware and concrete. On the motion of Cr. WatkiHs, seconded by Cr. West, it was resloved that neither tender be accepted. It was also resolved, on the motion of Cr. Buttimore, seconded by Cr. Mannix, that the borough engineer be authorised to Jay down a few chains of sewers in cement pipes, with a view to testing the suitability of those pipes for sewerage. CHAIN BRIDGE, JUNCTION ROAD. Mr. R. Ellis, clerk to the Taranaki County Council, wrote that lie had been instructed .by the chairman of that Council to inform the Borough Council that the county chairman had consulted his committee with reference to the inclusion of the above bridge in the, agreement to be prepared in connection with the Henui bridge. They were decidedly against altering the agreement in the direction indicated by the Borough Council. The committee of the County Council stated further that tht> matter was mentioned when the committees met in conference, but it was not discussed any further, as the County Council did not contemplate re-erecting the structure. It was resolved on the motion of Cr. Watkin, Seconded by Cr. West, that the council do not insist on the Cham bridge, Junction road, being included in the agreement with the County Council with reference to the Henui bridge, and that the agreement be sealed and signed by His Worship the Mayor and Cr. Browne on behalf of the Borough Council. ELECTRIC POWER IMPROVEMENTS. , Mr. H; W. Climie, consulting engineer, under date April 22, 1911, wrote that after conferring with the Electric Light sub-committee (Mr. Browne, chairman, and Mr. Black, electrical engineer), he had prepared new plans and specifications for the new, forebay. In these were embodied all the particulars then »oted, and he had spent considerable time and thought in, working out the details, with the result that the plant were full and complete in every particular. Now the Council's engineer (Mr. Black) wrote him a six-paged letter containing a number, 6i ; further sugges,tics9 and .alterations and 'requiring different minor The plans had now been,returned to,hjm.:for the purpose of making these but before he did anythmg-,further in the matter, he would like to,,be-informed by the Council as to his position. Was ke the engineer for, this .work or was Mr. Black ? The whole matter was discussed at length, and it was resolved, on the motion of Cr. Clarke, seconded by Cr. Watkins, that Mr. Climie be informed thai the Council recognised him as their consulting engineer, and that | ,he be responsible for the plans and specifications •f the forebay, etc. At the same time, however, the Council,, trust that he would carefully consider' the suggestions made by the sub-committee consisting of Cr.
