The leading horsemen, A. Whittaker and H. Gray, rode only one winner apiece at the Easter meetings. Boanerges got a very bad passage in the Easter Handicap, and only got clear of the ruck at the distance. After a spell of bad luck, the Hon. J. D. Ormonde horses showed winning ' form at Ellerslie. Bootle (2), Woodhey and Miscount won races, and gathered in £IO4O in stakes. Just before Easter Koran was doing' well, but the hard tracks played up with him and soreness prevented the Waverley horse from racing at Feilding. It is time racing clubs awoke to the fact that the bookmakers are gone, and that adequate totalisators should be supplied for the convenience of patrons. At Riccarton and Ellerslie last week hundreds of pounds were shut out of the machine. Loch Fyne ran well in the Steeplechase at Ellerslie as long as his condition lasted, and, the old fellow's jumping was 'as good as ever. He should be "cherry ,ri,pc" when the steeplechase season opens shortly. Amongst the winning jockeys at Ellerslie pride of place goes to Charlie Brown, who won the Easter Handicap and (ireat Northern Oaks on Antoinette the St. George's Handicap on Northeast, and the Auckland Welter oh''Mister Wairiki. F. D. Jones, and Luke Wilson each rode and M. Ryan and H. Stockley were successiul twice. As usual, Soult headed the list of winning sires. Descendants of the defunct son of St. Simon won seven of the twen-ty-four events* of the meeting, both flat and stick events. Birkenhead was represented by Woodhey and Bootle, the latter a double winner. Wairiki, Leolantis and Gluten each claimed a double winner. Bearers of Clifford's "chequers" ran first five times and second four times at Riccarton, and the successes of Madam Madcap in the Croat Ea<ter and Counterfeit in the Challenge Stakes would plea™ the squire of Stonyhurst greatly.
