The appointment of Mr. James Brown as an inspector of factories is gazetted. Mr. G. W. Bennett has been elected unopposed for the Mayoralty of Inglewood. Lieutenants Eayner B. Smythe and Sydney G. Sandle, of the Royal New Zealand Artillery, have been promoted to the rank of captain. ' A Gisborne telegram states that Mr. John Wilson, a well-known architect, and prominent bowler, aged 74, was taken ill on Thursday night -and died early yesterday morning. Dr. W. J. Maekay has been appointed superintendent and medical officer ot the Kelson Lunatic Asylum, and Dr. St. Leger Hugh Gribbon has been appointed Inspector of Asylums, Hospitals and Licensed Houses. Lieutenant-Colonel R. W. Tait, ot Greytown, has been gazetted colonel in command of the Wellington Infantry Brigade, and Lieutenant-Colonel A. H. Russell colonel in command of the Wellington Mounted Rifles. Mr. 11. L. (Bob) Cutfield, of Mr. Newton King's New Plymouth staff, was on Thursday evening presented by Mr. Fred Watson, on behalf of the staff of both the New Plymouth and Stratford branches, with a purse of sovereigns in view of his marriage, which will take place shortly. Colonel T. W. Porter, C.8., New Zealand Militia, whose total service to March 31st last was thirty-one years 3tK) days, has been awarded the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officers' Decoration. The meritorious service medals have been awarded to Staff Sergeant-Majors Coleman and Wilson, of the New Zenland Permanent Staff.
