COAL IN PAPUA. Melbourne, April 13. Mr. Staniforth Smith reports that there are undoubtedly large deposits of coal in Papua, but in rough country. Barges cannot be taken within seventy miles, and it is doubtful if mines would be payable. LAND SETTLEMENT. Sydney, April 13. Mr. Ncilson, Minister for Lands, speaking at West Wyalong, said that the Government intended throwing open vacant Crown lands instead of resuming privately j owned properties.
