ATHLETICS

EASTER MONDAY SPORTS. There is every indication of a most successful sports gathering eveiituaiiug ■ in the Recreation Grounds on Easter Monday. Big iields are assured, as re- . cord nominations have been obtained. There should also be a record attendance, as there is no other big attraction set down locally for Easter. The ground is being thoroughly dressed, and should be in tip-top condition. The blocks for the chopping and sawing events arrived yesterday. They have been obtained by men who, as competitors, have had considerable experience of the class of timber required, and there should be very little cause for complaint on this score. The first annual meeting of the Purangi Athletic Club's sports was held in Mr. Tone's paddock on Friday last, and . from a financial point of view was a great success, although the club waß very unfortunate in having bad weather, ' which greatly interfered with the attendance. The fields in all the events were good and the finishes close, especially in the chopping events. The men did not monopolise fihe whole programme, for there were events for ladies.
