A SHIPPING DISASTER
A HARROWING SIGHT. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright Received 11, 11 p.m. Ottawa, April 11. The death roll of the steamer Iroquois, which foundered on Monday, does not exceed eighteen. She foundered at the mouth of the port, within view of hundreds of people. A launch started out to the rescue, but her machinery failed, and she was unable to reach the drowning people. Many were afloat on the upper works of the steamer, but dropped off one by one. Several floated ashore on wreckage. The captain, several passengers, and five of the crew escaped in damaged lifeboats.
