ATHLETICS
THE AUSTRALASIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. In reference to the hostile criticism of the action of Messrs. Marryatt and Pollock in supporting Wellington as tile place for holding the Australasian Athletic Championships, they state that in spite of the resolution revoking their appointment to the council they remain Otago's representatives until such time as their successors arc appointed. The rules provide that the number selected to the council shall be elected at the annual meetings of the centres. Therefore they claim they must remain members of the council till the Otago centre at its annual meeting shall appoint other delegates. The New Zealand Association's rules do not permit of centres revoking the appointment of delegates. They hold that in the matter of selecting the place for the championship meeting members of the council are entitled to exercise freedom of choice. It is not a matter to be decided by the vote of centres, and is expressly set down as one for the decision of the council. They were in possession of evidence which showed that Wellington was undoubtedly the mo9t desirable place to hold this gathering, and they claim that they could not have disregarded this evidence without doing grave injury to the .general management of amateur athletics in* the Dominion, Even' the member who voted in favor of Duncdin at the council meeting admitted that ontheir merits the arguments in favor of Wellington were unanswerable. Messrs. Marryatt and Pollock hold that the council is not a sub-committee of the centres, but a body vested with discretionary powerß, which it would be disastrous to take away from it.
