The Royal College of Surgeons baa awarded the Cartwright prize to Professor Pickeriil, of Duncdin, for an essay on "Tihe prevention of dental cares." The Rev, C. Palk, of Waiuku, is to be associated with the Rev. J. W. Griffin in the Cape Egniont circuit of the Methodist Church. The Rev. Laybourn will be leaving Rahotu shortly. Mr. Percy G. Morgan, M.A., a nativu of New Zealand, who for some time past has been Government general geologist, has been appointed director of New Zealand geological surveys, to sucoeed Dr. Bell, resigned. The Rev. T. G. Hammond, Maori Missionary in Taranaki for a considerable number of years, has t been offered and has accepted, the position of Foreign Mission Deputation in New South Wales and Queensland. A Waipawa telegram reports that Mr. Stephen McGreevy, wlio is retiring from public life after forty years' service on various local bodies, was presented with a; silver inkstand, salver, and calendar holder and a case of pipes by borough councillors and staff.
Brigadier General R. H. Davies, C.8., lato of the New Zealand Defence Force, was presented to the King recently at his Majesty's first levee, reports the London correspondent of the New Zealand Times. The presentation was made on the appointment of Brigadier-General Davies to command a brigade. Lieut.Gcncral Sir H. L. Smith-Dorricn, K.C.8., acted as the New Zealander*s sponsor. As recorded by wire last week, Mr. James Gear, one of the pioneers of industry in Wellington province, and founder of the Gear. Meat Preserving and Freezing Company of New Zealand, Ltd., died at his home at Porirua on Wednesday. He was seventy-four years of age, and became a member of the butchery trade in Somersetshire, England, when only ten years old. He cam# to Melbourne in 1857, and on to th« goldfields in Gabriel's Gully, Otago, in 1861. About 1803 he established himself as a butcher in Lambton Quay, Wellington, where he was subsequently joined by a Mr. Ling. In liter years the business grew and prospered, Mr. Ling retired, and then Mr/Geir floated the Gear Company, which was incorporated in 1882. Mr. Gear became managing director, and held for a great many years, while the. company grew and prospered, and * became the large nnd powerful concern if is to-day. In 1879 Mr. Gear was married to * daughter of Mr. Joseph Jtfilstead, of Wellington, and he had one son and two daughters.
