A WARNING TO WELLINGTON
IF AN EARTHQUAKE CAME t By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Friday. Dr. Malcolm MacLaren, the wellknown geologist, in an interview, remarked that the warning he gave in Wellington four years ago regarding the need to make buildings erected in that city earthquake proof had been disregarded. Dr. Bell, the late Government Geologist, had since expressed similar views. There may yet be ample time,' Dr. MacLaren said, to prepare for a serious earthquake shock. To build at all in Wellington is folly; to continue building in defiance of the well-known principles governing the construction of earthquake proof buildings is criminal. A severe earthquake may not come for fory years; it may come to-morrow. That it will come is certain. There would be a terrible calamity if an earthquake were to occur in Wellington at any time. Should it occur in wet weather it would be doubly appalling, since serious slips would occur on all sides of the city, which is surrounded by hills.
