Dr. Izard definitely announces his candidature for Wellington North at next general election. Mr. J. Lane, .assistant town clerk at Mnstertnn, died in the local hospital on Wednesday night, after a short illness. Mr. Murdoch Fraser accompanied the Taranaki bowling contingent who wen passengers by the Rarawa last night. The Rev. James Kayll, advisory officer to the Prisons' Department, has been appointed Secretary to the Prisons Board. A Nelson telegram reports that Councillor T. Field opposes the sitting Mayor, Mr. T. Pettit, at the forthcoming mayoral election. Mr. Asquith is suffering from a cold, and was unable to attend the dinner to Sir John Fuller, the new Victorian Go-, vernor.—Press cable. Mr. R. N. Jones, of Gisbornc, has been appointed Deputy Chief Judge of the Native Land Court during the leave of absence of the chief judge. A Press cablegram states that Mr. Heimiker Heaten is seriously ill, and Dr. Lauder Brunton's bulletin is that it will be some days before he is out of danger. The Hon. T. Mackenzie left Mokau by motor-ear at about ten o'clock yesterday morning for Te Kniti, where he stopped last night, returning to Wellington this morning. Mr. .1. W. Foreman, chairman of the Clifton Countv Council and member of the Waitara Harbor Board, has decided not to seek re-election to either body at the close of his present term.
Major Charles Mackie Begg, M.D., New Zealand Medical Corps, has been appointed principal medical officer to the Wellington Military District, with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. The Colonial Auxiliary Forces long service medal has been awarded to Captain William Henry C!aphitm (retired list), and Major A. W. Jones (No. \ Company New Zealand Engineers). The Ciutha Leader understands that Mr. Parker McKinlay will be the accepted candidate for Bruce in the Liberal interest, and it is probable he will be the only opponent to Mr, James Allen. The Misses W. R. and S. R. Baker, who have been residents for some years, and who have been prominent in Anglican and musical circles in New Plymouth, left last night for Auckland, where they intend to reside in future. Mr. J. 0. Harkness is to be nominated for a seat on the Wellington Harbor Board as representative of payers of dues on goods. At present he represents the Chamber of Commerce on the board, but this seat is abolished under the new Act. At yesterday's meeting of the Clifton County Council a letter was received from the Hon. Mackenzie, Minister of Public Works, acknowledging receipt of the Council's invitation to visit Waitara and promising to avail himself of the same as soon as the time at his disposal permits. Mr. F. G. B. Waldegrave, Commissioner of Police, returned to Wellington by the mail train yesterday morning. Mr. MacParlane, Inspectpr of Prisons for New South Wales, who accompanied the Commissioner on Ms visit Eere, was a passenger for Auckland by the Rarawa last night. His Excellency the Governor (Lord Islington) has been appointed honorary Colonel of the 9th (Wellington Eas't Coast) Mounted Rifles. The Prime Minister (Sir Joseph Ward) has been promoted from honorary Captain to honorary Colonel of the sth Regiment (Southland Rifles). Bishop Wilson, who has resigned the Bishopric of Melanesia, left Auckland by the mission steamer Southern Cross on Wednesday for Norfolk Island, accompanied by the Rev. C. E. Fox, who is en route to the Solomon Islands. Bishop Wilson will shortly take np the duties of Archdeacon of Adelaide and rector of St. Andrew's, Walkerville,
