ANGLO-JAPANESE ALLIANCE
THE NEW TREATY. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright Received 0, 10.50 p.m. London, April 0. The Anglo-Japanese treaty will generally reduce the duties of the statutory tariffs by one-third in important classes. The duty on textiles, iron and steel goods, and cotton tissues is $V>& per pound, compared with 14d under the statutory tariff; fine woollens, lO'/od, compared with 13d; pig iron, 2s lOd per ton, compared with 3s 3d; tin plates, 24s 2d, compared with 31s Id; corrugated sheets, 41s 6d, compared with G9s 2d. The treaty stipulates that British goods are not to be more heavily taxed than other nations', and enumerates Japanese exports, amounting to £2,150,000 a year, which will continue to be admitted free during the twelve years the treaty is to be enforced. Six months' notice enables Britain to abrogate the clause. The Times comments on the Government's candour and fair play, and says its successors will thus be hampered if they desire to place a duty on imports. . _.. .",■„.., Tokio, April 6. Count Komura, Foreign Minister, at a banquet celebrating the alliance; said the alliance had well fulfilled its purpose, and was capable of yet greater good in its own sphere, and the commercial treaty happily supplements the alliance.
