WHITELEY MEMORIAL CHURCH

QUARTERLY MEETING. The quarterly meeting of the officers of the Whitele'y Methodist Church was held on Tuesday night. The financial statement for the quarter disclosed a very encouraging state of affairs, as there was a credit balance of t'-tl after making allowance for extraordinary expenditure incurred in connection with the recent conference. The collections in w mteley Church for the quarter amounted to £l3l. Mr. Gilinnn, circuit steward, .submitted a motion expressing regret that the conference had removed the Rev. J. U. Chapman from the circuit, and extending to the rev. gentleman the best of good wishes for his success in his future work. Various members of the quarterly meeting endorsed this .sentiment, and it was explained that at any time when Mr. Chapman should visit New Plvmouth the officials would he very pleased to see him occupy the pulpit of the church. The Rev. Mr. Chapman, in reply, expressed his regret at leaving New Plymouth. He had learned to love the place, and had met with great kindness during his stay here. He had hoped he won.'d be .stationed in New Plymouth circuit for five years, for every minister felt .'.hat the last years of his ministry were the most successful. H«> a s k<.<] the officials and congregation to extend their hearty co-operation to his successor, the Rev. Xr. Burton, who, he said, was not only a powerful preacher, but also an able writer, and pointed out that he had been one. of the most successful missionaries connected with the Methodist. Church. Proposals were discussed re arranging some special effort during the winter months to 'raise funds for reducing the present trust debt, and it was understood that the congregation, including the whole of the young people, will he called together at an early date to con* siiler suggestions. A meeting of the trustees was held subsequently. The secretary, Mr. V. Griffiths, submitter! statements showing the position of the,trust fund and reports on the general work of the trust.
