THE PRICE OF BUTTER-FAT.

To the Editor. Sir, —Will you kindly allow me space in your valuable paper to comment on one or two statements made by "Butterfat" in his letter contained in your issue of March 28, to the etl'ect that the "butter men of Oinata chimed out so merrily that • they would pay lld per lb for butter-fat as well as a bonus." Apparently ''Butter-fat* is shaking hands with himself, for he has evidently got hold of the wrong end of the stick, as the Omata Dairy Company do not promise anything except the monthly cheque. They certainly have paid lid to the end of January, and the suppliers have every confidence in the managefnent, knowing if there is a surplus they will undoubtedly receive a bonus. Perhaps it will interest ''Butter-fat" to know that the proprietor of a certain cheese factory met some farmers in a hall early in the present season and stated there was a bonus for his suppliers of last season. I know one that is still waiting for that bonus. .To quote "But-ter-fat" again: He says "one cheese factory here has paid 1$ per lb for butterfat from the opening of the season, nnd will continue to do so until closing down for the season." This statement is incorrect, as the price has already been reduced from Is to lid, "Butterfat" also says: "The cheese men will receive at the end of the season a substantial bonus on all butter-fat supplied if the balance of cheese sales turn out well." Well, they will be able to do with it, as butter men are confident they will come out best in the end.—l am, etc., COMMON SENSE. Omata, March 30. [The writer also shows that the butter men's tests are higher than the cheese men's. We regret we cannot publish his own words and figures, which contain an inference the publication of which might bring us into conflict with the libel laws, which even now olTcr protection neither to newspapers nor the public.—Ed.] '
