The Echo de Paris says that "Herr Bethmann Hollweg's remarkable speech has surely dispelled like a mist the dreams of certain Englishmen and Frenchmen. Le Figaro says that Germany regards universal peace as a dream, and does not wish to renounce war, but intends to play in the world the role of a powerful nation. • DISSIPATING ILLUSIONS. "ARM OR GO UNDER." Received 2, 5.5 p.m. London, April 1. The Times says that Herr von Hollweg's speech was not unfriendly towards England. It was remarkable equally for its commonsense and clear cut reasoning, and must dissipate the illusions entertained concerning the practicability of the limitation of armaments. Other newspaper declare that as over- J tures for peaceful and happier relations have been thus rebuffed, there* is no choice but to arm or go under. A SIGNIFICANT REMARK. The Journal de Debats declares that Herr von Hollweg politely bows to President Taft and Sir Edward Grey, but the paper quotes Herr Von Hollweg's J remark: "The weak must always be a prey to the strong," and adds that no | sentimentality and no combination of ] dreamers would ever surmount that/ eternal verity. ' • CLENCHING THE MAILED FIST. A WARNING TO BRITAIN. Received 2, 5.5 _ p.m. „ J Berlin, April 1. The Socialist journal, the Vorwaerts, i says that Herr von Hollweg had clenched the mailed fist and declared war on disarmament, in brazen defiance of the German people. The Neuste Nachricnten says: "As long as Germany keeps powerful she J will always be able, when our good cousins are caught short on the world's exchange, to snatch for ourselves the rewards in prospect." ________ !
