A London cablegram reports the dcatli of J. Hickey, the Australian horsetrainer. On Monday Mr. and ills. H. Caplen and two daughters leave Jlawera en route for England. Constable Hadler, who for some years has been attached to the ITawera station, assumes control of the Normauby police district to-day. Mr. Geo. Ilnll, of Lepperton, leaves tonight on a three-months' trip to Norfolk Island. At the expiry of that period lift may extend his travels, and remain away six or twelve months. Mr. F. Calgher, late of Inglewood and now in the Terminus Hotel, New Plymouth, has secured the lease of the Whangamomona Hotel, and enters into possession at an early date. Mr. W. O'Meara, of the Wellington Customs Department, has been transferred to New Plymouth as landingwaiter. Mr. W. H. S. Lewis, clerk at New Plymouth, goes to the Wellington office. A Press Association telegram from Invercargill announces the death of Mr. William John MofTett, one of the pioneer residents in Southland. He arrived in 18,01, and died, by ft strange coincidence, while Southland's jubilee was being celebrated bv massed liands. The deceased was 74 years old.
Mr. William Fitzpatriek, a well-known sheep-farmer in the Amuri, North Canterbury, has just disposed of his property known as Stanton View, five miles from Waiau. It is Mr. Fitzpatriek's intention to take up land on the Darling Downs, in Queensland, and he will leave the Dominion almost immediately. A Press Association cable message announces the death at Hamilton, Ontario, of the Right Rev. Dr. John Philip Du Moulin, Bishop of Niagara. Born at Dublin, Ireland, seventy-seven year* ago, the deceased had a distinguished university and clerical career. He had' been Bishop of Niagara since 1896. Sergt. Haddrell, who has been granted nine months' leave of absence, leaves tomorrow on a visit to England. He will be accompanied by Mrs. and Miss Haddrell. Serirt. Dart, who has been appointed to the charge of the local police district during his absence, will not arrive for a few days, and in the interim Detective Boddam will have charge. Mr. Richard Price, who for the past ten years hai occupied a seat on the Harbor Board as>a representative of the Government, has decided to contest the county' ward seat at the forthcoming election. It may be mentioned that Mr. Price was present «t the laying of the foundation stone of the breakwater by Superintendent Carrington in 1881. and his ambition is .to board the first oceangoing liner as a member of the Board. "After that," ho informed our representative on Saturday, "I will be quite con* tent to rest on my laurels."
