WARSHIP BUILDING
THE COMMONWEALTH'S PROPOSALS. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Sydney, March 31. Mr. Holman states that the dock will probably be able to complete a warship in two years, the percentage charge upon the total cost representing seven or eight per cent, upon the cost of material and labor. The dock has nearly completed the work of fitting together the destroyer Warrego, which will be launched on Tuesday. The superintendent of the Cockatoo dockyard estimates the cost of turning out new warships at over £500,000. It will require 3000 men to build them. The men are not obtainable in Australia, and they "will have to get over a thousand shipwrights from England.
BANKERS SHOW THE WAY. London, March 30. The Hon. A. Lyttelton, presiding at the annual meetins of the Bank of Australasia, said that the cost to Australia and New Zealand of providing a fleet would inevitably be serious, but the directors of the bank would be the first to cheerfully shoulder the burden.
