•A SOLDIER COURT-MARTIALLED.

By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Yesterday. A private in the. Hutt Valley Rifles appeared before a court-martial last night. The case was only a trivial one, of refusing to help earry'ammunition to the Drill Hall, but is the first courtmartial held in the district under the new Defence Act, which now opens them to the Press. The accused pleaded guilty, but the finding was not made public. WELLINGTON EXHIBITION. Wellington, Yesterday. The promoters of the Wellington Exhibition Teport very satisfactory progress. Practically al'l the available space for letting has been received from various parts of New Zealand between Auckland and Dunedin. Preparations ade well advanced, and the Industrial Association is confident of a notable success. CATTLE THIEF. Christchurch, Yesterday. George Gordon was committed for sentence, having pleaded guilty to the theft of three heifers. He is a drover, and while taking a big mob of cattle up to Conway, picked up the heifers, trucked them to Addington, and had them sold on his own account. LYTTELTON HARBOR. Wharfage revenue increased bv £5830 to a total of £29,830, beinn- a record for the port. Shipping "increased 50,271 tons. The chairman said the dock was a white elephant, and did' not pay working expenses. The total loss to the board was £178,011. IMPORTANT WibL, CASE. I Wellington, Yesterday. The Chief Justice gave a somewhat important decision to-day on an originating summons in which four children, disinherited by their mother's will, asked that provision be made for them. The proceedings were connected with the estate of Elizabeth Green, worth £930, which had been left to a sister of the testator, plaintiffs claiming that they were in poor circumstances and that no adequate provision had been made for them. The claims of two plaintiffs were dismissed, and they wore ordered to pay £lO 10s to defr.iv the cost the executors had been put to. The third plaintiff. His Honor ordertd. should receive os per week, and the fourth plaintiff the sum of £SO. The two latter were suffering from physical ailments. MINING '.-OMMrSSION. Wiring*-*!. Yesterday. A meeting of the Ilikurangi Mine Workers' Union unanimously passed a resolution protesting against the action of the Government in ignoring the recommendations of the Federation of Labor re the appointments on the Royal Commission dealing with sanitation etc.. of mines, and stating that unless two are recommended by the Federation to replace two appointed union members they will refuse to give evidence before the commission.
