Sutton's Giant Evergreen Italian Ryegrass CORRESPONDENCE CONTINUED. . [Extract from New Zealand Times.] (To the Editor "On the Land"*. gIR,—In your issue of Oth inst., giving an account of the Feeding Show, jpk report that Mr. A. L. Josephs, of Ohristehurch, pointed out that *r\m the good work of Mr. Lowrie (late of Lincoln College) was his having drata attention to the wonderful merits of Sutton's Devon Barer ryegrass. The* has, however, been some confusion of the two grasses—Sutton's Devon lava perennial ryegrass and Sutton's Giant Evergreen Italian ryegrass. It is Suttoni (iiant Evergreen Italian ryegrass that is at Lincoln College. I spent a day r"* Mr. Lowtic in September, and he then told me what he told Mr. Joseph, showed me the fields. I recognised the value of Sutton's Giant Italian v< ago, and have grown it regularly, and can endorse what Mr. Lowrie said, that there is no grass in cultivation to compare with it. It grows all the ■f- xiind rushes away early in the spring, and stands more feeding anils better ' ing than any grass I have seen, and on good land will stand for* three or «*. years, and on river silt I have had it as many as ten years and is still good. button s Devon Eaver or Devonshire Evergreen Ryegrass is a perennial, and. as its name denotes, is green all the year round. The verdant hills of Devon are proverbial, and, being a native of thateounte I made enquiries, and found that the grass lands there (that had nat t*ea ploughed m the memory of man) were composed chiefly of the Devon Barer <* Eavergreen ryegrass (as the local people call it) and crested dogtail. It i to Messrs Sutton, and arranged with them to collect this special strain fo: and it has already got a name for itself in New Zealand. In Taranaki w... there are a number of Devonshire people, it was taken up at once, and oirr'aoent* Messrs E. Griffiths and Co., have splendid reports. In Southland also whm is well known, it is much prized for its perennial character and winter'growth lam writing this in order to prevent mistakes being made, and the ton's* quent disappointment—l am, etc., GEORGE TOTHM, E.
