FIRES.
STABLES BURNED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Gisborne, Monday. Another fire occurred at Makaraka on Saturday night, destroying Gaine's Carrington Stables on the opposite side of the road to where Sorry's house was destroyed that morning. The origin of the fire was also unknown. Insurance on the building was £IOO in the Norwich Union. The contents, which were mostly saved, were insured for £75. HOUSE DESTROYED AT DENNISTON. Westport, Last Night. A fire at Denniston yesterday destroyed a cottage owned by. G. Wright, who had packed ready to leave Denniston, after twenty years' residence, for Australia, on a moving picture venture. The building had only recently been painted and renovated, and was undo offer for sale, a possible purchaser having inspected it two hours before the fire took place. The insurance on the building was £IOO in the North Queensland Office, and £3O on the organ. AT FITZHERBERT EAST. Palmerston N., Last Night. A house at Fitzherbert East, owned by Jesse Hills, of Palmerston, and occupied by Mr. Patchett, was totally destroyed by fire this afternoon. The fiTe is supposed to have been started by some embers from a fire in the yard. The insurance on the house is not known, but there is an insurance oi £l5O on the furniture. LOCAL OUTBREAKS. •fln Saturday evening a fire broke out at the residence of Mr. R. Simpson, Moturoa, whieh was fortunately extinguished before much damage was done. About 8 o'clock Mrs. Simpson was alarmed by a noise in one of the bedrooms, and on entering discovered somei clothing to be in flames, the noise she heard having been caused by a cord burning through and allowing the picture attached to it to fall to the floor. She immediately gave the alarm, which was promptly responded to by neighbors, who soon subdued the flames. Another slight outbreak occurred yesterday morning while painters were engaged in burning off the paint from Dr. Fookes' residence preparatory to repainting it, the flame from one of the l spirit lamps going through a crack in the bay window cornice on the second floor, and setting fire to the inner portion of the cornice. The brigade, who were at once summoned, were quickly on the spot. To get at the flames it was necessary to tear down some of the cornice. When this was done, the fire was soon extinguished.
