THE STRIKE IN WALES

GILBERTIAN PROCEEDINGS. INT IMIDATING PRACTICES. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 27, 11.45 p.m. London, March 27. The Times' Tonypandy correspondent describes as Gilbertian the inward working of the strike. The leaders agreed to ballot because they were compelled to hold a ballot, lest the strikers lost the British Miners' Federation contribution. They arranged to hold a ballot concurrently with the distribution of funds. The strikers received with their strike pay a perforated card, one half marked "For," and the other "Against," and were instructed to display the unused half on their caps. The Strike Committee supplied pins to attach the tickets to the caps. The militant leaders were stationed at voting booths. The correspondent adds that a more ingenious or effective form of intimidation is hard to imagine. Out of twelve thousand strikers two thousand are boys, and were not allowed to poll, while nearly three thousand adults were absent, seeking work elsewhere. The strikers are drawing foodstuffs and necessaries from tradesmen on credit. They consider strike pay as pocket money, and not to pay rent with. THE CAMBRIAN MINE TROUBLE. OBDURATE STRIKERS. Received 28, 12.20 a.m. London, March 27. The Daily Chronicle says it is unable to understand the Cambrian Combine miners' rejection of honorable peace. Their earnings , were slightly above those of the rest employed on the coal field. The companies offered to meet exceptional cases, whilst Mr. Llewellyn, the manager of the Cambrian Combine, was ready to investigate and settle the matter of abnormal places with the miners' agent.
