During the past six months a large number of British sailing vessels have been sold to foreign buyers—and of sailers over 1000 tons burden no fewer than 15 per cent, were disposed of during the summer and autumn, at nominal prices. A long period of depressed freights culminated in the early part of 1910 in sailing ship-owners being unable to obtain any employment whatever for their craft, and the boats, which cost on the averaged about £lO per ton to build, have realised little more than £1 per ton. The British sailing fleet outnumbered that of any other nation by six to one a few years ago, but at the present time i the Norwegians have as many vessels of over 1000 tons as Britain lias, and they are rapidly increasing their sailing Ueet. There are only about 250 British sailers of over 1000 tons register, and besides the Norwegians the Germans have a fleet of over 150 ships of this size, the French have nearly 170, and the Italians over 100.
