GOLF
ANNUAL MEETINGS. NGAMOTU CLUB. There was.a good attendance of members, including several ladies, at the annual meeting of the Ngamotu Golf Club, which was held in the Town Hall last night. Mr. A. H. Glasgow (captain) presided. In presenting the annual report for the season 1910-11 th's committee congratulated the club on its continued progress. The report stated that the linKs had been kept in their usual good order, and play had been possible for the twelve months! Starting with a credit balance of £7 14s 2d the year closed with a credit of £22 8s 7d, to which had to be added the sum of £SO placed in the names of the trustees of the club with the New Plymouth Savings Bank. The membership of the club is as fonows: Havers, men 08 (59); ladies 51 (50). Honorary, men 4 (7), ladies 22 (19). During the season, in addition to the Easter Tournament and a full list of club matches, a number of inter-club matches were played, the club being successful in all .but one. The ladies also hail the usual club and inter-club matches. Arrangements for the annual Easter Tournament are well in hand, Messrs. C. A. Jones, C. H. Weston, and W. C. Weston forming the) committee for this fixture. The ladies pifrpose holdin» a two days' tournament following on the men's. During the year".Mr. H. B. Armitage, a member of the* committee for some years, was transferred from New Plymouth, and the club lost in him a keen player and worker. "His place on the committee was filled by Mr. C. A. Jones. Mr. 11. C. Wright, an old member and this year's champion, is also leaving New Plymouth, and his loss will be much felt. Your committee has engaged McC'ormick, the Auckland professional, for four weeks, from April 24 next, and it is hoped that full advantage will be taken of his services, and that the standard of play will be benefited. The committee wishes to place on record its sympathy with the president, l'-. Standish, in his recent illness. His ar '.'lloo from the links during the latter part of the season was felt by all members, and it is hoped he will soon be quite restored to health and able as in previous years to l ikc «n active imrt in the game. The Links.—This question must he faced definitely in the near future, the lease of the present links expiring on ■March 31, 1913. As members are aware, the negotiations for the property under consideration at the last annual meeting fell through, and eventually, at a special general meeting held on June 8, 1910, a committee, consisting of Messrs. C. A. Jones, J. Pa ton and W. C. Weston, was appointed to go into the question of properties suitable for golf links, and report to the club committee within three months. Owing to unforseen circumstances, however, the committee had npt been able to make a report. It would be necessary for the club to decide what further steps should be taken.
In moving the adoption of the report, Mr. Glasgow referred to the fact that last season had been a most successful and enjoyable one. During the season the club had saved £65, and he considered that they should be able to at least maintain that amount each year-, as now there was only the upkeep to be proTided for. '- *>«* M H
The report was adopted without discussion.
Officers were elected as follows: President, Mr. A. Standish; vice-presidents, Messrs. ('. IT. Burgess. E. T. Morshend and Dr. Walker; captain, Mr. C. A. Benbow; hon. secretary, Mr. W. H. Haslam; treasurer, Mr. E.P.Webster; committee. Messrs. A. H. Glasgow, W. Bewley, C. A. Jones, and F. S. Johns; auditor, Mr. V. Elliot.
(Mr. C. H. Weston was appointed solicitor to the club in place of Mr. Cecil Wright, resigned.
The opening day was left in for the committee to decide.
Championship.-—lt was resolved that for the championship, two qualifying rounds of 18 holes be played, the first eight to qualify, and play-off by match play, the final to be 30 holes, if possible.. Mew Links.—The committee appointed to go into the question reported that they were still negotiating, and had at present practically nothing to report. It was resolved that the committee, Messrs. .T. Paton, C. A. Jones, and W. C. Weston, be granted an extension of time.
A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to all retiring officers, and especially to Mr. W. Bcwley, retiring secretary.
OARRINGTON ROAD CLUB. There was a large attendance at the annual meeting of the Carrington Road Club, held last night. Mr. Geo. Grey (president) was in the chair. The balance-sheet, which was read, showed a satisfactory state of affairs. In moving the adoption of the bal-ance-sheet the president stated that the golf-house which had been erected during the season had cost practically £SO. and of this £32 17s 2d was still on overdraft. However, this would probably be wiped out by this season's subscriptions. They had, however, the rent of the links to face, which had to be paid in advance. He mentioned that probably after this year the subscription would have to be increased, or else an entrance fee would have to be levied. The pavilion required improving, and the greens required attention, and an improved financial position would conduce to the comfort of the play of the members. They were faced with the difficulty that tihey could only secure the. linKS lor a year at a time. The following offiocrs were elected: President, Mr. T. C. List; vice-presidents, Messrs. R. Cock and G. Grey; secretary, Mr. W. 11. Broome; treasurer, Mr. T. Furlong; committee, Messrs. R. George, H. Law, F. Tribe, E. Cook, ,T. H. Hempton; nuditor, Mr. 11. Black; captain, Mr. G. Grey. Tt was decided to forward to Mr. T. Schnnekeiiborg an expression of appreciation of the work he had done on behalf of thn club, and of regret at his departure From the district.
The retiring president suggested to the i'lcominir committee that' they should go into the matter of local rules, and get a copy'printed and placed in the clubroom.
It wns arranged that the ladies appoint a -ncinl committee. Complimentary reference was made to Mr. 1(. (.Vorsro's (the retiring secretary's) service? during the year, and a hearty vote nf (ln-iks was parsed to him. A vote <if thanks (,) tlie chairman concluded |ln- meeting. WAYERLEY CLUB.
