THE ENGLISH TURF. By Cable —Press Association—Copyright. London. March 21. Following is the result of the Lincolnshire Handicap: Mereutio 1, Brandiminitine 2, Spanish Prince 3. Lepper (in the chair), Thomson, Sole, Nolan, Alexander, Weston, Hempton, Blundell and Ellis. The Egmont Racing Club's programme for May 17 and 18 was approved. A trainer's license was granted to A. D. Adams. The disqualification was removed from J. W. Thompson. TARAXAKI JOCKEY* CLUB. Messrs. Lepper, Ellis and Blundell were appointed a committee to consider tenders for alterations and additions to caretaker's cottage, and with power to act. Mr. Webster was voted a bonus of £25 as a mark of appreciation of his services during the time he has been acting as secretary. J TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") For a meeting of only minor Importance, splendid acceptances have been received for the first day's events at the Masterton Racing' Club's autumn meeting, which opens to-day, and the presence of Te Puia, Lethean, Soultiform, Master Sylvia and other Taranakiowned horses at Masterton provides a dash of interest in the racing. The Waipipi Cup, run over a mile and a quarter, has drawn seven horses. Te Puia has been running well of late, and has earned the distinction of being topweight with a handy Bst 71b. Nine have paid up for the March Handicap, the crack sprinter, Full Rate, being steadied with lOst 81b. How he will fare with other promising ones as Sunbonnet, Simplex and Te Roti remains to be seen. A poor lot are engaged in the Masterton Hack Handicap, Brown Trout (of the heavies) and Melalogne (of the lightweights) siiowing consistent form recently. The Rabbiter was credited with winivn;; the hack hurdle race on the secoi!;l day at Napier Park in a trifle over 2niin 47$ cc, and (with the hurdles down) it is doubtful whether that time will be bettered in the Ladies' Bracelet this afternoon. No less than twcitythrce have cried content in the popular Dash Handicap, and Taranaki claims a brace of representatives in Soultiform and Master Sylvia. Of the ten figuring in the Welter, Lethean, Meroze, Te Roti and Brown Trout have other engagements during the day. The Maiden can- 1 didates are not much class. Makara being amongst the likely runners. Foreshot (Sst 111b) was omitted from the telegra piled acceptors for the Maiden Hack Race at Masterton. It is reported that Luke Wilson has severed his connection with Mr. T. H. Lowry's stable, and will indulge in a few months' holiday before donning the colors again. Manawatu nominations include Valentine, Highden, Lethean, Lady Menschikoff and Soultiform. The tote handled £5451 at Opunake last week, as against £4163 the previous year. Manupai, a double-winner at Napier Park, comes of a galloping family, and is a full-sister to the speedy Pink 'Un. Mallet was ridden a nice race in the Opunake Handicap, Valentine and Tam Glen cutting each others' throats for a mile. When called upon the Malatua gelding quickly cut down the tiring leaders, and won handily. j Three starts and three different riders was Cullinan's lot at Napier Park.j Luke Wilson and A. OHivcr rode him into second places, and T. O'Brien landed the black horse a winner. It is stated that J. Fryer lias purchased St. Toney from the executors of the late W. P. Finch. Mr. G. P. Donnelly's 'chaser, Gold Seal 11, is set to carry 9st 111b in the Liverpool Grand National Steeplechase, to be run on Friday. Ivohinoor has struck form again, ana with lOst up easily accounted for the opposition in the Stewards' Welter at Waimate (Canterbury) last week. The knowing ones went nap on Gay Lawless for the Maiden at Napier Park, but the "good thing," after getting! away smartly, quickly floated back to the rear, and stopped there. Thus doi brilliant track "doers" run like wasters] with the colors up.
Jockey E. Lowe will ride Te Puia in. the Waipipi Cup, and other riding en-| gagements reported are C. Emmerson (Deploy), and H. Gray (Zealand and Gunboat). Some people say that Cornelian was lucky to win at Opunake. With Avaunce left standing at the post, the chestnut led all the way in the Final Stakes, and just got home in front of the fastfinishing Joey. Cornelian struck a hot member in Kntua in the Electric, and, was not disgraced by defeat from that quarter. For a "green" horse, Cornelian shaped well, and Trainer J. Fryer will work great improvement on him' in the next month or two. I
Mr. A. Mack's appropriately named Scotch won three races at Paeroa, and was ridden by Whittaker each time. !
The Wangamii Trotting Club's meeting takes place to-day and to-morrow, and judging by the lengthy list of acceptors, some good sport should be provided. trotting did not find favor lasvi year in the town which went delirious] over its "champions," and the club is deserving of support in coming up again' a#d making a bold effort to popularise *J good sport. It is to be hoped that thisi week's meeting will prove a success. I At Forbury Park the other day, Red' Child was clocked to trot two miles in I 4min 33sec from scratch 1 in the Telegraph Handicap (saddle), which was J marvellous performance. The time wasi taken by several reliable "sptorts," and may, I suppose, be accepted as correct.
Zcalwood and Daffeney, not being registered with the Trotting A.ssoeiation, ire not eligible to start at the Wang'anui Trotting meeting. It transpires that the reported sale of Soultifonn fell through because the horse could not get a clean certificate from the vet. A person, signing himself "Financier,", gets the following on to an unsuspecting contemporary: "I went to the Pahiatua races, and only had three halfsovereigns when I got back. Next day I was presented with a bill, which I simply had to pay. I went to all my friends to try and borrow the necessary half-sovereign to make up the two pounds, but there was nothing doing. : Finally a bright idea struck me. I took my three half-sovereigns to a pawn shop,' and said, 'Will you lend me twenty shillings on these?' The pawnbroker, examined them, and said, To be sure,'| and gave me twenty shillings and a ticket for thirty shillings. Then I went to a friend of mine and said to him, 'Here, I have a ticket for thirty shillings; Will you give me twenty shillings for it V He said he was glad to. Then I had my two pounds; my friend had a ticket for thirty shillings wjiich only cost him twenty shillings; the pawnbroker had thirty shillings cash which only cost him twenty shillings; and everybody seemed satisfied. The question is: Who got hit ?" Now that's a fine tale to spring on a religious editor, who probably never saw the inside of a pawnshop in his natural. "Who got hit ?" Well I should say "Financier" got hit when his "friend" found out that he had paid twenty shillings for a ticket that was worth nothing at all until he had paid the pawnbroker an extra twenty shillings (advanced) plus 6s 4d (interest for one month on the 20s). "Financier" would be "taken down" by the lads in the "first primer" if he could invent no better tale than the above.
