PARIHAKA REJOICINGS

PRESENTS FOR THE ACTING - PREMIER. Oil Sunday morning, before leaving for the Te Wliiti marae, Tohu's son presented the Minister with a number oi mats and other presents, including two roast pigs and a roast bullock,- these latter being handed over for a continuance of the feast. When arrived at Hit Te Wliiti marae, a similar scene took place in honor of the departed prophet Te Whiti, with the usual speeches of welcome and greeting. The Minister, in addressing the TeWliiti-ites, again urged the accessity for union amongst the two sections. HEALING THE BREACH. The result appears to be that the breach which lias existed for so long between the two parties has been practically healed owing to the tact displayed by the Minister, and that in future they will be found pulling together, and the isolation of Parihaka done away with. Some of the older natives may be found to stick by the old prejudices which have become so ingrafted in them, but the younger men of both factions appeared to be pretty unanimous in adopting the suggestions and advice of the Hon. Mr. Carroll, which will lead to them adopting a new order and coming into line with tilt laws of the country. UTILISING THE PARIHAKA BLOCK. With regard to land matters, we understand the village boundaries will he enlarged to provide land for cultivation for those who desire to reside in the village, and that others who have in-, terests there will have provision made for them to occupy sections in the 8000 acres whicli comprise what is known as the Parihaka block. BREAKING UP PARIHAKA. It is expected that the result of the visit will be the breaking up of Parihaka as a meeting place for the discontented to gatlier and formulate schemes for passive resistance to • the laws of the country, and that the waste lands in the Parihaka block will be brought into useful occupation by the Maori landowners. If this result ensues, the Minister will have performed a good work which will be of great benefit to the district generally.—Opunake Times.
