MUSICAL COMPETITIONS
IRE THEY HARMFUL? By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington. Last Night. A meeting to-night decided to form a New Zealand musical, literary, and oratorical competitions society, to conduct competitions similar to those in other centres. A letter was read from the representatives of the Society of Professional Musicians, protesting against the proposal. It was urged t.l'at competitions are of no artistic value to the community, and in some respects exercise more or less injurious influences. Amateurs should be kept free from temptations to become other than amateurs, in the true sense of the term, and love music for its own sake, The publicity and money prizes offered at competitions provide temptations leading to the interruption of the students' regular studies. The nervous strain induced by public performance and the false value set upon success were also objections.
