Sutton's Giant Evergreen Italian Ryegrass CORRESPONDENCE CONTINUED. . [Extract from New Zealand Times.] (To the Editor "On the Land"). S IR,-Iny T issue of <stb inst., giving an account of the Feiiding SEow, yfl| report that Mr. A. L. Josephs, of Christchurch, pointed out that amoqg tlie good work of Mr. Lowrie (late of Lincoln College) was liifi having drawl attention to the wonderful merits of Sutton's Devon Eaver ryegrass. Then lias, however, been some confusion of the two grasses—Sutton's Devon QaVel perennial ryegrass and .Sutton's Giant Evergreen Italian ryegrass. It is Sutton!) Giant hvergreen Italian ryegrass that is at Lincoln College. I spent a day with Mr. Lowrie in September, and he then told me what ho told Mr. Joseph, and sliowed me the fields. I recognised the value of Sutton's Giant Italian vean ago, and have grown it regularly, and can endorse what Mr. Lowrie said, that there is no grass in cultivation to compare with it. It grows all the winUt and rushes away early in the spring, and stands more feeding and is better feed* ing than any grass I have seen, and on good land will stand for three or four years, and on river silt I have had it as many as ten years and is still good. Sutton's Devon Eaver or Devonshire Evergreen Ryegrass is a perennial, and as its name denotes, is green all the year round. The verdant hills of Devon are proverbial, and, being a native of that county I made enquiries, and found that the grass lands there (that had not been ploughed in the memory of man) were composed chiefly of the Devon Eaver <* Eaveigreen ryegrass (as the local people call it) and crested dogtail. It wrot* to Messrs Sutton, and arranged with them to collect this special strain for m<L and it has already got a name for itself in New Zealand. In Taranaki whew there are a number of Devonshire people, it was taken up at once, and our'agenta Messrs E. Griffiths and Co., have splendid reports. In Southland also, where is well known, it is much prized for its perennial character and winter growth. I am writing this in order to prevent mistakes being made, and the «ons» quent disappointment.—l am, etc., GEORGE TOTHILL E. GRIFFITHS AND CO. NEW PLYMOUTH.
