DISTRICT NEWS.
WAITARA ROAD. (From Our Own Correspondents.) The annua] school and settlers' picnic was held in Mr. Louis Andrews' paddock on the 14th inst. The attendance was not quite up to that of former years. The officials had everything in first-class order, and things went oil with a swing. Everybody seemed to have a real good time. The first part of the afternoon was taken up with children's sports, about sixty prizes being distributed amongst them, each child receiving a prize. Appended are the results of the children's races: — Standards V. and VI. (girls) —Dulcie Surrey, Rlioda Herrick, Annie Smith; boys': Aleln Old, Stanley Loveridge, Standards. HI. and IV. (girls)—lrene Rowe, Phyllis Nicoll, Elsie Surrey; boys: Roy Old, Lawrence Palmer. Standards I. and 11. and part 111. (girls) —Ladysmith Punga, Irene Surrey, Julia Kenealy. Standards I. and 11. (boys over nine) — McWilliam Ropiba, Lawrence Loveridge, M. Kenealy; liars ton. Rowe, Pouki Raraaka, John Hicks. Standards I. and 11. (boys under 9) — Percy Surrey, Hugh Rowe, Albert Rangi; Fred Palmer, Everan Loveridge, Nelson Andrew. Boys over B—William Ropiha, Leonard Pue. Under 8, llughie Andrews, William Loveridge, Thomas Surrey. Primer girls—Ruth Palmer, Venetia Andrews, Laura Smith. Tie catering was in'the hands of Mr. Jeffries, of Waitara, and was all that could be desired. At about four o'clock the children made off to the hall, when a good tea was laid, and following the children the adults sat down to the man.y goods things provided. Tea over the sports ground was again made for, and the following adult races, etc., yvere got off:— Girls' Race—Vita Xicoll 1, Joyce Bennett 2, Clarice Rowe 3. Young Ladies' Race—Miss R. Free 1, L, Desaunais 2, J. H. Smith 3. Girls' Race—Joyce Bennett 1. Men's Sack Race—Bert Wells 1, B. Bennett 2. Three-legged Race (girls)—L. Smith and O. Totara 1, Annie Smith and Joyce, Bennett 2, Clarice Rowe and Alice Totara 3. , Three-legged Race (boys)—McWilliam" Ropiha and Carlson Rowe I, AlJfln Old Jltld- Saju Jenkins 2, Stanley j loveridge and Michael Kenealy 3. 'UREXUI. _ Much sympathy is felt for the relatives of tlie late Mrs. Kenah, of Okoke, who died in the New Plymouth Hospital on Sunday. Mrs. Kenah had only been married about nnie months. The Rev. Heke, native minister, lost his little child at Waitara, where it was taken for medical attention. Mr. C. X. Rowe has received word from the Defence Department that his application for the New Zealand war medal has been granted. Better late than never! The telegraph men have just connected L'renui with the Okoke post office. This will be a great boon to the Okoke settlers.
