ATHLETICS.

FESTIVAL OF EMPIRE TEAM. JJy Telegraph.—Frees Association Wellington, Last Night. At a meeting of tne local committee oi the Festival of Empire sports, tats Australasian committee wrote stating that the New South Wales (government had agreed to give £ for £ subsidy up to £2OO, which enabled G. Smyth, the champion middle-weight wrestler, to be sent. The secretary stated that the amount collected in New Zealand waa £122 Is Gd, and with an amount in sight totalled roughly £2lB 4s fid. A telegram waa received from R. Opie, stating that he could go on Thursday, . but no berth was available on the Corinthic. It was decided to send him by ' the Ruahine, sailing on April 6. It was resolved to send a letter to Sir J. G. Ward informing him of the personnel of the team, also the events in whicli they are competing. It was also decided to ask the Acting-Premier to arrange with the High Commissioner for the team to be met on arrival at London. EASTER MONDAY SPORTS. It is quite expected that there will be very large entries for the running, cycling, chopping and sawing events for * the Easter Monday sports in the Recreation Sports Ground. The committee has purposely reduced the prize money in the belief that fewer of the "cracks" will be present, and thus induce very " many promising Taranaki runners and ' cyclists to "try their luck." There is, no doubt that the "bogey" of a welV known scratch man is very real with' young runners, and the entries for many sports meetings suffer in consequence. : The novelty of adding events for axemen, with good prize money, should be much appreciated by the public. In additiou to the 12-inch and 18-inch chojje, the committee has now added, in response to requests from bushmen, a double-handed sawing event. The presence of the leading Taranaki axemen is already assured. In response to s request, the committee has also added a one mile cycle race for youths under 18. This will now make Jive cycling events on the programme, necessitating no lew than ten races. The combination of fast cycle racing, exciting axemen's events, and a leaven of track running, should provide a varied aud enjoyable programme. The programme is advertised in this issue, and intending competitors should note that nominations close on Saturday week, Ist April. HANDICAPS FOR OAKURA.
