FROZEN MEAT TRADE
EXPOET TO SWITZERLAND. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. ' Received 21, 9.30 p.m. Sydney, March 21. •f The first parcel of frozen mutton .from' Australia to Switzerland is being jhipned by the steamer Essex. The Swiss authorities have given permission for the importation, and the shipment consists of five hundred specially selected carcases, to be sent via London and Antwerp by the Colonial Meat Export Company. Mr. Hughes, managing director of the companj", is urging the importance of opening new markets. A single market is easily over, supplied, making it easy to manipulate prices below a profitable shipping level. Referring to the present low prices in London, he suggested they were possibly due to the Home distributors anticipating early large supplies of Australian meat, as the result of the good season, but it was more likely due to the methods adopted by the Americans, who had captured 70 per cent, of the Argentine trade, their motto being: "First spoil the market at the consuming centre, and the consumer and producer will be at jour mercy."
