AMUSEMENTS

BIOGRAPH PICTURES. The large audience assembled at tile Theatre Royal on .Saturday night left at the conclusion of the programme thoroughly satisfied with the genuine merit of the films screened. If anything, each change of programme seems to go one better than il.s predecessor. The star films on this week's series are two American bio dramas—"Unexpected help," a fascinating tale of American cum]) life, and "The House with the Closed Shutters." The characters are Charles Bordolph (a heavy drinker),hfe mother and sister, descendants of a fighting family. Charles holds a commission on Ueneral Lee's stall', in the Confederate army, and when the regiment is ordered on active service, Agnes presents it with a Hag. Charles is sent on a most important mission. During the journey lie becomes afraid ami drinks heavily to revive his courage. Ho goes home and drinks still more. Agnes dons Charles' uniform and proceeds in his stead. She delivers the dispatch, but. on her return her horse is shot down. She rushes into the light, the Hag is in danirer of capture, and Agnes seizes it, but is fa lull v shot. The death of Charles is ollicially reported and the mothei commands that Charles remains behind closed doors that ,the world may not know his sister died protecting a coward: The story reaches a most pathetic eonelusion twenty-five vears later. Tluscenic. and comic pictures arc fine e* nmples. Particular mention must, be made of "Oberland of llerna" and "The Cogwheel Railway of Montreaux.'' Tile stereoscopic effect in each picture is beautiful in the extreme. The programme will be repeated to-night.
