Mackenzie reaches Gisborne to-night from Motu. He was welcomed at the latter place by the settlers, and matters of district interest were placed before him. He knew the I difficulties of construction lay beyond the Motu, but was very hopeful of getting a good grade from Papamoe to Opitiki. Although the route was a few miles longer than by Pahiki, still he was satisfied that the railway by Papamoe was the cheapest and also opened up a large area of good country, whereas by Pahiki there was no settlement to I speak of.
