OPUNAKE RACING. CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING. There was a large attendance at the Opunake races yesterday. The cr.jrsc was in perfect order. The fields were good, the racing was keen, and the finishes close. There were no accidents, protests, or any other unpleasantness to mar the enjoyment. About £SOOO passed through the totalisator, a considerable increase on last year. The Hon. Jas. Carroll was an interested spectator. There were no less than thirtyseven motor-cars, and numerous other vehicles of all descriptions. The meeting was excellently managed by Mr. G. W. Rogers, secretary, and other officials. The Opunake Band was in attendance, and played a fine programme. Results: Handicap Hurdles. —Mr J. M. Laurent's Clemency (Pine), 9.8, 1; Zante (Wayne), 9.8, 2; Mississippi (Cochrane), 9.6, 3. Also started: Waitapu 10.10, Silver Cluse 9.0, Silver Slipper 9.0. A fair start; won on the past by a nose, after a great struggle up the straight. Time, 2min • 15 4 j ssec.
Flving Handicap—Mr W. Gordou-Glass-ford's Bay Paul, 8.7 (Barlow), 1; Sandy Paul, 8.3 (Ayre), 2; Lady Loo, 8.3 (Holmes) 3. Also started: Valentine 9.0, Bonny Lass 7.10, Sinn Fein 7.7, Sam Pan 7.7, Silver Spur 7.7, Joey 7.7. Bay Paul was first out from an even -start, and led throughout, winning easily by two lengths, the third horse a length away. Time, lmin 18 3-ssec.
Handicap Maiden Trot, Mr. C. H. Bradford's Echuca (C. Bradford), 1; Cliff (R. Coates) 2; Huon Berlin (Fairley), 3. Also started: Erin's Tracy, Pihama, Alpenstock, Flywheel, Kaiwarra, Rahotu, Lady Rose, Dolly W, Vanity V, Kate Allerton, and Ella Bell. The winner trotted well throughout, and won easily by a hundred yards, twenty yards separating second and third. Time, 4min 2sec. Opunake Racing Club Handicap, of 100 sovs. —Mr. J, Foreman's Mallet {Ryan), 9.0, 1; Valentine (Price), 8.7, 2; Darby Paul (Home), 7.3, 3. Also started: Tarn Glen 8.0, Lady Heroine 7.0. A good start. Tarn Glen led past the stand and round the back, where he was joined by Valentine, who took the lend two furlongs from home, and was first into the straight. Here Mallet challenged the leader, and in an exciting finish won by a head. Time, 2min 13 l-ssec.
Electric Stages.—Mr. J. Brown's Katua (C. Brown), 1; Cornelian (Coleman), 2; Dover Straits (Monk), 3. Also started: Queensland, St. Venton, Wiume, Kokirianewa, and Gamecock. Katua went to the front almost immediately, and was never headed, eventually winning by a length from Cornelian. Dover Straits half a length away third. Time, 51 2-5 sec.
Handicap Trot—Mr. J. C. Montefiore's Erin's Tracv. 20scc (Wilson), 1; Ella Bell, 34sec (Riley), 2; Nancy Till, Osec (Fleming), 3. Also started: The Flasher lOsec, Pihama 20sec, Huon Berlin, Kalu G 34sec. Erin's Tracy won an interesting race by four lengths. Time, omin 42 l-ssee.
Welter Handicap.—Mrs. J. L. Fogarty's Dover Straits, 8.7, 1; Sandy Paul, 0.2, 2; Bay Paul, 9.4, 3. Also started: Monsieur Soult 9.4, Lady Loo 9.2, Tam Glen 9.2, Clemency 8.13, Bonny Lass 8.10, Maroo, Sam Pan, St. Vcuton, Sinn Fein 8.7. Dover Straits won easily by three lengths, paying a sensational dividend. Time, lmin 31sec. Final Stakes.—Mr. J. J. Fitzgerald's Cornelian, 1; Joey, 2; Silver Cluse, 3. Also started: Queensland, Avaunce, Pavo. Avaunce was left at the post. Won by a head.
