A London cablegram reports the death of Lord Tindale.
The Hon. Jas. Carroll, Acting-Premier, attended the Opunake races yesterday. Mr. W. S. Young, of Otakeho, has been spending a short holiday in Xew Plymouth.
A Melbourne message states that the date of Lord Dudley's departure will be July 20.
A Press cablegram from Home states that the Duke of Aosta will represent Italy at the Coronation. Mr. Asquith has returned to London from Switzerland, where he went owing to his daughter's illness. The death occurred at the New Plymouth Hospital yesterday afternoon of Mr. 0. F. Sampson, of Waitara. Mr. W. Gillanders, a New Zealander, has been appointed secretary of the Sydney Young Men's Christian Association. Mr. Walter Blair, of South Taranald, who underwent a serious operation in Xew Plymouth recently, is now convalescent.
A Sydney cablegram says that Prince Leopold of Battenberg has fully recovered from his recent illness and hag left to visit the East.
Owing to ill-health, Mr. Leslie Orbell, of Timaru, at one time in the Transfer Office in Xew Plymouth, will leave Xew Zealand next month for a trip to the Old Country. On enquiry last night at the hospital we learned that there was a slight improvement during the afternoon in the condition of Mrs. J. R. Hill, and last night her condition was much the same. The friends of Mr. A. Larscn, of Uruti, who recently underwent a critical operation at Xew Plymouth, will be pleased to learn that he is now out of danger and making progress towards recovery. Dr. Pomare, health officer to the Maori Councils, arrived from Auckland by the Rarawa yesterday morning, on his way to the gathering of natives which is to be held at Parihaka* to-day. Mr. R. H. Campbell, of New Plymouth, has purchased the Whangaoiomona Hotel from Mr. W. Abbott. As previously reported, Mr. W. J. Williams, late of Feilding and Petonc, succeed* Mr. Campbell as "mine host" of the Grosvenor.
Mr. Thomas Walsh, ex-sergeant of th« 87th Regiment, died at Newcastle (N.S.W.), aged 87. He served under General Pollock when avenging tie massacre of Pollock's division in the Khyber Pass, through the Sikh and Crimean wars, the Indian Mutiny, and in the 70th Regiment took part in the Maori war.
Some thirty or forty residents of Fit*roy gathered in the" Fitzroy Hall on Thursday evening to bid farewell to Mr. Parkin, who is shortly leaving for England. Mr. Foote, who occupied the chair, on behalf of those present, presented Mr. Parkin with a handsome travelling bag as a small token of their esteem. Mr. Parkin suitably responded. Songs were contributed by Messrs Pearce, Wadman and others. 'The singing of "Auld Lung Syne" and three! cheers, .for . the guest brought a very! enjoyable evening to a clpse. 'The death of Mrs. E. W. Seagcr, wife of Mr. E. W. Seager, for many years connected with the public servicein Canterbury, removes another of the old colonists. Mrs. Seager, who arrived with her family in one of the early ships, was the fourth daughter of Mr. T. Coster, of Christchurch, and was married in 1854. As, matron of the Sunnyßiile Mental Hospital, where she had charge of all the female patients for many years, Mrs. Seagcr evinced great powers of organisation, added to much kindliness. She leaves' six daughters and three sons.
At Thursday's sitting of the Magistrate's Court at Opunakc, references were made by the presiding magistrate and by counsel to the long service of Constable Hickman, who for over 30 years has acted as police constable and clerk of the court at Opunakc. and who retires from the service at the end of this month. The spcalters eulogised Constable Hickman for his strict attention to his duties and to his willingness to assist others, which had won the esteem of both Bench and Bar, and the hope was expressed that he would be long spared to enjoy his time of rest. Constable Hickman suitably replied.
