Sydney, Tuesday—Arrived, at 5 a.m., Manuka, from Wellington. THE GERTIE. The Gertie arrived from Westport yesterday afternoon from Westport with a full cargo of coal for the Gas Company. She discharges her cargo to-day. THE ROSAMOND. To enable the Rosamond to keep to her time-table, the usual call at Nelson will be omitted this trip. Nelson cargo will be brought by the' Oorinna. The Koiamond will arive as usual to-morrow. • A NEW SERVICE. ! An auxiliary ketch named the "Jane" has arrived at Waitara from the North. It is intended to trade between the coast ports and Waitara and New Plymouth, as cargo offers. She is said to l be a very serviceable vessel and well adapted to the trade she will be engaged in. Her engines are capable of giving a speed of six knots. Messrs Green and Wilkinson (master and engineer jMisppctively) are the owners. A VETERAN SKIPPER. Commander J. F. RutliVen, the commodore of the Orient fleet, whose retirement was announced recently, has probably conveyed more people between England and Australia than any other living man. He joined the Orient Company on its formation in 1881 as chief officer of the Garrone—the first steamer to fly the house-flag of the Orient Company—and then, after assisting to superintend the fitting-out of the Orient, assumed command of that vessel. Next he wss promoted to the command of the Lusitania, and .subsequently commanded in succession the Cuzco, Garrone, Chimborazo, Austral, Ophir, Omrah, and then the Orontes. Captain Ruthven took command about twenty months ago of the R.M.S. Orsova, the first of the new 12,000-ton liners of the Orient Company, and upon the completion of the Orvieto was transferred to that vessel. Prior to entering the service of the Orient Company he was employed for ten years and a-half in sailing ships. Captain Ruthven has covered nearly two and a half million nautical miles, has passed through Port Philip Heads 330 times, and through Sydney Heads 338 times. He has navigated the Suez Canal on 154 occasions. Iu his early days he was shipwrecked off Port Philip Heads, and reached Melbourne with the remainder of the ship's company in lifeboats.
