A SERIOUS STRIKE
DELAYS SHIPPING OPERATIONS.

A strike of fifty casual hands employed as capstan men on the Railway Department's wheat loading sidings at Darling Island, caused a complete stoppage of work. Altogether over eight hundred employees are affected. The strikers demanded an increase of pay. The Department conceded the demands as far as day work was concerned, but refused the full increase asked for night work. Several vessels are stuck up. THE MATTER SETTLED. Received 14, 9.55 p.m. Sydney, March 14. The strike was declared off late this afternoon, the men's demands being conceded. The wharf laborers then declined to work for the remainder of a broken day. Operations were suspended till the morning. The demands granted were for an increase of 7s 6d to 8s a day of eight hours, and an increase from Is to Is Cd an hour, for overtime. The men have been restless for an increase since a fortnight ago, when one of their number was killed, they using this as an argument regarding t;ie danger of working electric capstann which replace the shunting engines. All the strikers were non-union-ists.
