CORRESPONDENCE
AMALGAMATION OF BUTTER FACTORIES.
To the Editor. Sir,—Several letters have appeared in your paper of laier over the name of "Joe B. Simpson," pointing out the necessity of having a large butter factory at the port of New Plymouth and the amalgamation of the dairy companies of Taranaki into one big concern, the idea being to, reduce the cost of production. I am afraid, Mr. Editor, that your correspondent has got on to a subject that he does not understand. He needs to give more facts and figures before he can get a hearing on this subject. Anyone with a knowledge of dairy factories knows that Mr. Simpson's idea is pure imagination. Surely he has not gone inljo the cost of conveying the cream from the-creameries of Taranaki' to the factory and the losses that would occur. If he had I am thinking that lie would have narrowed his ideas down to something smaller and more workable. I believe that amalgamation in many cases would pay and reduce the cost of production by 'half of what it is at the present, time. Take the two factories in our own district, the Moa and Maketawa. These two are working within three miles of each other; the cost of delivering the cream from one to the other, would be a very small item indeed. Had Mr. Simpson got 011 to something of this kind tie would have been better understood. Being fifty years ahead with new ideas is rather too much for our frail minds to grasp. Hoping 1 have not trespassed too much on your space, —T am, etc., J. RICKARD.
