' The crust around the cratir of Mount Vesuvius, for 300 yards in length and 24 feet in thickness, subsided, causing shocks and rumbling noises. The upper station at Funicular was damaged. An imposing canopy of ashes overhangs the mountain. The crater seems lower, and Vesuvius appears decapitated.
